I have been contemplating these photos since you posted them...I like them a lot, but I couldn't pin point why. I find it super intriguing, but not creepy, at least not from this point of view. Perhaps if I saw them myself it would be different. I would love to know more about your trip to this place...without sounding like I am morbidly intrigued.
Morbidity is a trait we might share! The place was extremely intriguing, and I think that is the big draw here, like Andy Warhols "car crash" series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Warhol) people are drawn to morbidity and disasters.
The trip is on a beautifully painted boat along a picturesque canal it takes about an hour and a half to get out there and we hit it just as the sun was setting. The island itself has a real creepy feel that intensifies as you spend more time there. There were little hovels that I found myself refusing to go simply because the creep factor was running strong in the energy levels.
One of the most disturbing things is that the dolls don't look like offerings, they look like sacrifices, the attitude they are hung in implies violence and that was the creepiest part for me. The island of the dolls is a must see oddity but it is definitely not a feel good place!

Hi Kristine, great pictures. Would you mind posting some details about how you got there, which port you used, cost etc. as I can't seem to find much useful help for this online. Everyone just says that this is a difficult place to get to and other blogs I've read have said they couldn't even find a boat that would stop on the island. thanks
Hi Vrais, I just took a boat from one of the many docks in Xochimilco and asked them to take me there, it's a pretty standard tourist request. Hope this helps!
