Having my Bones read by a Sangoma

“As my sufferings mounted I soon realized that there were two ways in which I could respond to my situation -- either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course.”

I went to see a Sangoma while I was in Johannesburg, South Africa.

His name is Sylvester and he lives in a township called Alexandra.
Becoming a Sangoma wasn't a choice for him, his ancestors pushed him into it, it was a calling.

We offered my Ancestors tobacco as a gift to summon them.

I had to bite off and chew an unidentified object and then spit it on the bones as I repeated after Sylvester, here he's showing me how it's done.

I threw the bones for myself,  they were a mixture of animal parts, shells, dominos, rocks, and other things.

This is what the bones told me:

When I travel sometimes I'm afraid like a wild rabbit, and I stand alert, terrified, looking for dogs.

But I shouldn't be afraid because the spirit of my grandfather is always there protecting me.

That I have pain in my body and it is my dead grandfather trying to get my attention, he loves me but wants me to honor him and talk to him.

I am afraid of relationships because I am too busy traveling, making my business and dreaming and that I think that if I marry a man I won't be able to dream anymore.

Sangoma's are very busy and important men in their culture, we paused for a call.

This is just a portion of a Sangoma's herb closet.

Meeting Sylvester and having him read my bones was an amazing experience, he is such a beautiful, humble man with a rich culture and a real love for those around him.

All over the world, in the most unlikely places there are people sharing their light, passing their power and their healing along for all that they can reach.

Thank you Sylvester, and thank you Candida Di Giandomenico for making it happen.

  3. I got a little teary-eyed when I read this: "I am afraid of relationships because I am too busy traveling, making my business and dreaming and that I think that if I marry a man I won't be able to dream anymore."

I hope that your reading gave you comfort and strength for your future journeys. Thank you for sharing! <3
